NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF)

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF) is a comprehensive set of guidelines created by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to help organizations identify, evaluate, and manage risks associated with the development and use of AI technologies. Released in 2023, the framework supports both private and public sector adoption of trustworthy AI.

The AI RMF is structured around four key functions:

  1. Map: Understand and contextualize AI risks across systems and stakeholders.
  2. Measure: Assess risks using qualitative and quantitative methods.
  3. Manage: Prioritize, respond to, and monitor risks over time.
  4. Govern: Establish oversight, policies, and organizational practices to support responsible AI use.

It emphasizes characteristics of trustworthy AI, including:

  • Transparency
  • Fairness
  • Privacy
  • Accountability
  • Robustness
  • Safety

The RMF is voluntary and flexible—designed to be adapted across industries, organizational sizes, and technology maturity levels. It complements other standards like ISO/IEC 42001 and serves as a foundation for aligning AI practices with regulatory requirements.

NIST also provides playbooks and profiles to help organizations implement the framework in practical, scalable ways.

How PointGuard AI Addresses This:
PointGuard AI supports NIST AI RMF adoption by providing technical enforcement of its core principles. The platform enables monitoring, accountability, and governance at runtime—ensuring that deployed AI models remain transparent, secure, and aligned with risk objectives. PointGuard turns NIST-aligned policies into operational protections for real-world AI systems.
